The xGen Amplicon 16S Panel covers all 9 V-regions as compared to traditional methods that cover one or two adjacent V-regions. This product was developed primarily for capturing more information of the 16S rRNA gene and thus providing better microbial community profiling.
There are at least two studies published with analysis tools, i.e., SMURF and MVRSION, in which reads from multiple V-region amplicons were used effectively to generate taxonomic profiles of microbial communities.
The xGen Amplicon 16S Panel is not designed for assembling the full length 16S gene, however, the 16S-SNAPP analysis pipeline, developed for this panel, is able to use a reference-based approach to associate reads from different amplicon regions to generate consensus sequences, approximating gene assembly.
The 16S-SNAPP analysis pipeline is a free open-source tool. Visit the Github page for more information.
